NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers formally asked a judge Monday to throw out his hush money criminal conviction , arguing that continuing the case would present unconstitutional “disruptions to the institution of the Presidency.“ In a filing made public Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers told Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan that anything short of immediate dismissal would undermine the transition of power, as well as the “overwhelming national mandate" granted to Trump by voters last month. They also cited President Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,’ and ‘treated differently,’" Trump’s legal team wrote. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, they claimed, had engaged in the type of political theater "that President Biden condemned.” Prosecutors will have until Dec. 9 to respond. They have said they will fight any efforts to dismiss the case but have indicated a willingness to delay the sentencing until after Trump’s second term ends in 2029. In their filing Monday, Trump's attorneys dismissed the idea of holding off sentencing until Trump is out of office as a “ridiculous suggestion.” Following Trump’s election victory last month, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed his sentencing, previously scheduled for late November, to allow the defense and prosecution to weigh in on the future of the case. He also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier. He says they did not and denies any wrongdoing. The defense filing was signed by Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who represented Trump during the trial and have since been selected by the president-elect to fill senior roles at the Justice Department. Taking a swipe at Bragg and New York City, as Trump often did throughout the trial, the filing argues that dismissal would also benefit the public by giving him and “the numerous prosecutors assigned to this case a renewed opportunity to put an end to deteriorating conditions in the City and to protect its residents from violent crime.” Clearing Trump, the lawyers added, would also allow him to “to devote all of his energy to protecting the Nation.” Merchan hasn’t yet set a timetable for a decision. He could decide to uphold the verdict and proceed to sentencing, delay the case until Trump leaves office, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court or choose some other option. An outright dismissal of the New York case would further lift a legal cloud that at one point carried the prospect of derailing Trump’s political future. Last week, special counsel Jack Smith told courts that he was withdrawing both federal cases against Trump — one charging him with hoarding classified documents at his Florida estate, the other with scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost — citing longstanding Justice Department policy that shields a president from indictment while in office. The hush money case was the only one of Trump’s four criminal indictments to go to trial, resulting in a historic verdict that made him the first former president to be convicted of a crime. Prosecutors had cast the payout as part of a Trump-driven effort to keep voters from hearing salacious stories about him. Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels. Trump later reimbursed him, and Trump’s company logged the reimbursements as legal expenses — concealing what they really were, prosecutors alleged. Trump has said the payments to Cohen were properly categorized as legal expenses for legal work. A month after the verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that ex-presidents can’t be prosecuted for official acts — things they did in the course of running the country — and that prosecutors can’t cite those actions to bolster a case centered on purely personal, unofficial conduct. Trump’s lawyers cited the ruling to argue that the hush money jury got some improper evidence, such as Trump’s presidential financial disclosure form, testimony from some White House aides and social media posts made during his first term. Prosecutors disagreed and said the evidence in question was only “a sliver” of their case. If the verdict stands and the case proceeds to sentencing, Trump’s punishments would range from a fine to probation to up to four years in prison — but it’s unlikely he’d spend any time behind bars for a first-time conviction involving charges in the lowest tier of felonies. Because it is a state case, Trump would not be able to pardon himself once he returns to office.I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here viewers have demanded Richard Coles and Loose Women star GK Barry work together again after the show. The pair have bonded during their time in the jungle and fans of the show are sure they would make a fantastic double act when they are back in the real world. @ImaCelebriTea posted an image of the pair and insisted: "Put them on Celebrity Gogglebox the moment they leave because their stories are unbelievable!! #ImaCeleb #imacelebrity2024 #ImaCelebrity." @xxncisaddictxx commented: "Can't deny GK and Richard are an hilarious duo #imacelebrity #ImACeleb."@RoslynMoore96 pleaded: "Can GK Barry have Reverend Richard on her podcast please and thank you #ImACeleb #imacelebrity." @Peter_H_Todd thought the duo would work well with fellow campmate Maura Higgins writing: "For me, @ITV needs to sign the rights for a new era of Generation Game & sign GK Barry / Maura and Rev. Richard as hosts. Those three would be absolutely perfect as game show hosts." Meanwhile @TVpsychologist pondered: "The relationship between GK Barry and Rev Richard is just a joy. Under any other circumstances they would never even meet, let alone connect so brilliantly. We all have the capacity for this, we just need the opportunities #ImACelebrity." One of their funniest moments on the latest edition of the show (December 3) came when GK confessed she used to be a goth and showed off the pose she had used for her social media sites. This led Richard to hilariously ask what was the difference between a goth and an emu - confusing the bird with the emo subculture. He also later appeared to forget the words to his own hit song as the campmates performed karaoke in the Jungle Arms. As the group all sang along to his band The Communards' number one smash hit Don't Leave Me This Way he seemed to be uncertain of the lyrics. Richard has become a fan favourite and is creeping up on Danny Jones and Coleen Rooney in the betting. Coleen is currently the second favourite to win at 13/8, while McFly's Danny Jones remains the favourite at 11/8, according to betting giants Ladbrokes. However Richard is now at 4/1 to take home the crown. He is the only other contestant with a price shorter than 20/1. DJ Melvin Odoom became the latest celebrity eliminated on tonight's show leaving just eight contestants to battle it out to win. I'm a Celebrity ...Get Me Out Of Here is on iTV and ITVX nightly at 9pm.slot machine how to win

The Golden Knights have played the Edmonton Oilers enough times to know what to expect. But even this version of the Oilers is a head-scratcher. The Pacific Division rivals meet for the second time this season Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena, with the Knights looking to bounce back from their 6-0 loss to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, the worst home defeat in team history. Fresh off their first full practice in two weeks and with the grueling part of their schedule nearly behind them, the Knights (15-7-3) face another tall task Tuesday. They’ll try to slow down Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the first leg of a back-to-back. “It’s a big opportunity to bounce back and try to get on the winning track again,” center William Karlsson said. “A very good team coming in. I feel like, in the past, we’ve been good against good teams, and we’re hoping that’s the case again, as well.” McDavid (32 points) and Draisaitl (31) are still the cogs in the Oilers’ machine that make it go. Those two would normally be leading a high-powered offense, but right now, that’s not the case. Edmonton (13-9-2) is 17th in the league in scoring at 3.0 goals per game. That’s not a familiar sight to anyone watching the Oilers, who last season had the fourth-highest scoring offense in the league. The Oilers are playing more out of their defense under coach Kris Knoblauch since he took over early last season. The change in defensive coverages and keeping the defensemen more in front of the net helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final last season. “Other than that, offensively, they’re still a team that’s dangerous on the rush,” Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “They defend the rush well and transition from it.” The offense has come alive during the Oilers’ three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 14-6. The Knights did a good job containing Edmonton’s rush in the last meeting Nov. 6, a 4-2 win at Rogers Place. It was one of the rare games in which neither McDavid nor Draisaitl had a point. A push is expected from Edmonton, which is 8-3-1 on the road this season. Karlsson is expected to draw the defensive assignment of McDavid. “It’s exciting, but also scary at the same time,” Karlsson said. “You’ve just got to be aware at all times. It’s tough, but you want to play against the best.” Projected lineup Ivan Barbashev — Jack Eichel — Pavel Dorofeyev Tomas Hertl — Nicolas Roy — Keegan Kolesar Brett Howden — William Karlsson — Victor Olofsson Tanner Pearson — Cole Schwindt — Alexander Holtz Brayden McNabb — Shea Theodore Noah Hanifin — Alex Pietrangelo Nicolas Hague — Kaedan Korczak Adin Hill Up next Who: Oilers at Golden Knights When: 7 p.m. Tuesday Where: T-Mobile Arena TV: ESPN+, Hulu Radio: KKGK (1340 AM, 98.9 FM) Line: Oilers -130, total 61⁄2 This is a developing story.
